It is ideal for pianos to be tuned every 6 months., and at minimum once a year. Pianos in institutional or professional settings may need more frequent tunings.
When pianos are far from the "standard" pitch of A440, a pitch correction is necessary to correct the tensions of the strings before a fine tuning can be performed. This includes one or more fast tunings of every string in the piano.
In houses that are well insulated, is it ok to place on an outside wall. More importantly , don't put the piano near direct heat sources (heater vents, wood stoves), direct sunlight, or an open window or door.
Humidity changes have the biggest impact on the tuning and at each major season change pianos often need to be retuned. Pianos also go out of tune if played hard and if moved. Plucking strings could also impact a tuning - and as oils from hands could damage strings, touching strings with bare hands should be avoided.
Free is often not really free. A free piano often needs extensive repairs to bring them to a minimally playable condition. Before you say "yes" I can help you evaluate the piano for you and estimate what, if any, repairs are needed.
Many well built, high quality pianos can be rebuilt to bring it in to excellent playing condition, often for less than purchasing a similar new piano. For other instruments if it has sentimental value, it may be worth it to you to get the piano into playable condition, even if you may not be able to sell it for what the rebuild may cost.
